Understanding the Need for Air Duct Sealing

Signs You Might Need Air Duct Sealing:

Are your electricity bills unusually high during summer or winter? Does it take a long time to heat or cool rooms in your home? Are dust and debris being blown throughout your living space? These issues might indicate problems with your air ducts, such as holes, leaks, disconnected ducts, or unbalanced air distribution.

Sealing your air ducts can help create a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. According to Energy Star, about 20-30% of the air moving through your ducts can be lost due to these issues, causing your heating or cooling system to work harder and potentially drawing dust and debris into your home from your attic or crawl space.

The Process and Benefits of Air Duct Sealing

The Sealing Process:

  • Unsealed Boot: This allows dust and debris to enter your home and warm or cool air from the furnace to escape.
  • Sealing with Mastic Tape: The sheet metal boot under the register is sealed with mastic tape.
  • Mastic Sealant: The boot is sealed to the floor with mastic sealant.

Benefits of Air Duct Sealing:

  • Energy Savings: Properly sealed ducts help reduce your energy bills by ensuring that your heating and cooling systems work efficiently.
  • Improved Air Quality: Sealing ducts prevents dust and debris from being pulled into your home, enhancing indoor air quality.
  • Increased Comfort: A well-sealed duct system ensures that your home is heated and cooled more effectively, maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.
  • Extended HVAC Lifespan: By reducing the strain on your HVAC system, sealing ducts can help prolong the life of your heating and cooling equipment.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Enhanced efficiency means your HVAC system uses less energy, reducing your carbon footprint.

The Air Doctor Standards

Air Doctor adheres to NADCA standard specification guide and uses the source removal method. We use a portable HEPA filtered air duct vacuum system (and/or gas-powered commercial air duct vacuums) to clean all supply ducts, return air ducts, and plenums. This system is brought into each room and used in conjunction with a compressed air whip (and/or rotating power brushes). The air whip agitates the duct while the HEPA filtered air duct vacuum system creates a negative vacuum at 3500 cfm (up to 10,000 cfm with our gas-powered commercial air duct vacuums). Once each supply air duct is cleaned, the return air system is cleaned in the same fashion. Finally, we clean the furnace unit.
